The World Health Organisation Conference on Safe Listening

On the 1st October 2015, Stephen Wheatley (MD) was invited to the World Health Organisation (WHO) headquarters in Geneva to participate in a conference on safe listening. It’s a topic close to our hearts. That’s why HearAngel® exists in the first place. We want to raise awareness about safe listening so that your and your children’s hearing is protected before it’s too late.

In February 2015, WHO estimated that approximately ‘1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices, including smartphones, and exposure to damaging levels of sound at noisy entertainment venues such as nightclubs, bars and sporting events.’

The WHO estimate is only for teenagers and young adults, but you only need to look around in public spaces such as trains and planes to notice that more and more adults and children are also using headphones and earphones. In today’s homes, members of a family can sit in one room and be entertained by different things on their personal devices. This technological freedom and media consumption create a risk to your hearing like never before. The biggest and most worrying issue is that most people don’t even know about it.

We hope that this conference at the WHO was another major step in actively increasing global awareness, and we will continue to do our part.
